Some Abbreviations please add to the list if i have missed any important ones

AC ……………………Activated carbon,
acro …………………. Acropora, a type of SPS coral

Units and conventions of of measurement
l - litre, SI unit of volume
ml - millilitre, 1,000ml = 1 litre
΅l - microlitre, 1,000΅l = 1 ml

g - gramme
kg - kilogramme, 1kg = 1,000 grammes
mg - milligram, 1,000mg = 1 gramme
΅l - microgramme, 1,000΅g = 1 mg

g - gallon, maybe either US or Imperial, confusing and usage should be avoided
USG or g(US) - US gallon, 231 cubic inches or 3.785411784 litres
IMP G or G(Imp) - Imperial gallon, 4.54609 litres

ppt - parts per thousand (e.g. ml/l, mg/g, g/kg)
ppm - parts per million (e.g. mg/kg, ΅l/l)

K - Kelvin, measure of absolute temperature, also used to describe the colour temperature of a light source

SG - specific gravity, the ratio of the density of a given substance to the density of water, commonly used as a means of approximating the salinity of water


Water Chemistry

Chemicals and substances
Ca - Calcium
Mg - Magnesium


NO2 - Nitrite
NO3 - Nitrate
NH3 - Ammonium

CO3 - Carbonate

H2SO4 - Hydrogen sulphide (bad egg smell)


CaCl2 - Calcium chloride
CaCO3 - Calcium carbonate
Ca(OH)2 - Calcium hydroxide

CO2 - Carbon dioxide



Chemical and physical characteristics of solutions
pH - measure of the acidity or alkalinity of a solution
dkh - carbonate hardness measured in degrees (dKH). It may also be expressed as parts per million of calcium carbonate (ppm CaCo3), or milliequivalents per liter (meq/L). Carbonate hardness a measure of the ability of a solution to neutralize acid without changing the pH.
dGH or dH - the measurement of the total dissolved minerals in a sample of water. Not generally referred to in saltwater aquariums.



Livestock
Animals (including corals)
SPS - small polyped stony corals
LPS - large polyped stony corals

BTA - bubble-tipped anemone (Entacmaea quadricolor)


acro - Acropora a genus of SPS
lobo - Lobophyllia a genus of LPS
trachy - Trachyphyllia a genus of LPS
zoa - Zooanthus a genus of soft coral closely related to anemones

invert - invertebrate, animals without a backbone


Plants (inclucing algae) and bacteria
chaeto - Chaetomorphae, an algae
cyano - cyanobacteria, also known historically as blue-green algae. It is not an algae but a widespread phylum of photosynthetic bacteria found in a variety of habitats


Other
LFS - Local (or Live) Fish Shop
Pico - picoreef/picotank, a very small aquarium up to 5 gallons
Nano - nanoreef/nanotank, a small aquarium usually taken as being between 5 and 20 gallons in volume
